Award-winning composer Jimmy López has been described as one of the most admired among the younger generation of South American composers. He is vice-president of kohoBeat, a non-profit music organization based in Helsinki. As part of the Renée Fleming initiative, the Lyric Opera of Chicago has commissioned him a full-length opera based on the bestselling novel "Bel Canto". He and Lyric were recently awarded the Prince Charitable Trusts 2013 "Prince Prize" for Commissioning New Original Work – the first time ever the Prince Prize has been awarded for an opera commission. The world premiere is scheduled for December of 2015. Four works of Mr. López received world premieres in 2013: "Lord of the Air", cello concerto, by Jesús Castro-Balbi and the TCU Symphony conducted by Germán Gutiérrez; "Ccantu", for piano, performed by Priscila Navarro at her debut recital in Carnegie Hall; "Perú Negro", dedicated to Miguel Harth-Bedoya and the Centennial Season of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra; and "Warped Symmetry" by flutist Sami Junnonen during the Hanko Music Festival in Finland.
